Powerful AI Screenwriting Hacks: 3 Ways to Level Up Your Screenplay

AI screenwriting hacks have become one of the fastest ways for writers to upgrade their screenplays.

If you’re looking for the best AI screenwriting hacks or wondering how AI can help you improve your screenplay quickly, this article will show you how to use Scriptmatix Story Engine to achieve those ends… quickly.

My favorite aspect of AI screenwriting apps like Scriptmatix is that it does the time-consuming, dirty work for you. But at the end of the day, the quality of writing is going to be up to the writer; the emotional impact, timing, delivery, payoff, etc. A computer can’t feel these things, not even the best AI screenwriting apps.

When I look into the future, I don’t see AI replacing screenwriters and storytellers in any meaningful way because the great storytellers will always outshine the computer because we feel, therefore we possess an intelligence that isn’t zeroes and ones.

My point is this: you must still work on your craft (AI can’t let you off the hook!)

However, there are AI screenwriting hacks (particularly the ones possible inside of Scriptmatix) that can offer to give you a major competitive edge.

As the creator of these AI screenwriting tools, I’m going to share 3 hacks for you AI screenplay writers out there who need to immediately elevate the level-up of your screenplays in time for your next screenplay contest deadline. These 3 hacks can quickly be implemented inside Scriptmatix Story Engine to make your script more professional and read more effortlessly.

AI Screenwriting Hacks #1: Sharpening Dialogue Lines

So your AI first draft has the story’s scaffolding in place, but some lines of dialogue feel flat (dare I say “robotic”). You need nuance and subtext quickly or else you risk boring your audience and shaming yourself in front of the unemployed, elderly, and likely bedridden judges of the esteemed Wiki Screenplay Awards.

Here’s what you do:

Open your script in Story Engine, and instead of using the Rewrite tool, I want you to open the Scriptmatix Assistant/Wizard, paste in the entire scene into the chat, followed by this simple prompt:

‘Please provide 5 options for a  replacement dialogue line for [paste your line here] with the following revisions: [list your notes, like “more nuanced with a tinge of  hesitancy and attraction.”].’

Once processed, you should have multiple variations of the same line with the specific flavor you’re after. If the line still isn’t landing for you, use the chat to reply and ask for a new batch of options with your desired tweaks.

NOTE: We’re pasting the entire scene in the chat for context. This is a very important step that you don’t want to skip.

AI Screenwriting Hacks #2: Augmenting Voice & Style

One thing you never want to do is send out an AI first draft of a screenplay. Your style and voice is instrumental to providing a unique storytelling experience. Nobody likes a robotic feeling screenplay. As audiences, we like flavor and style. But let’s assume you’re a green screenwriter and you don’t have enough experience to develop your own style. This is where rewriting the scenes with a specific voice in mind can make all the difference.

This is where Rewrite tool comes in. Open the rewrite window, and instruct it to infuse some style. For example:

“Rewrite in the style of Aaron Sorkin, with short punchy action lines and witty dialogue.”

or

“Rewrite for a darkly comedic tone in the vein of the Coen brothers.’

The more specific you are, the more the Rewrite tool can shape the scene into something that matches your intended style.

There are endless possibilities here to make even an amateur sound like a pro (is this cheating… I feel naughty!). And the good thing is that this tactic is simple. If the instruction works for one scene, it’ll likely work for the others, so paste them into the Rewrite window for each scene and within minutes, unleash a voice so fierce it’ll jolt the pacemakers of the esteemed Wiki Screenplay Awards judges panel.

AI Screenwriting Hacks #3: Entering Late & Exiting Early

In my professional experience – having read hundreds of scripts of all skill levels – the #1 principle of screenwriting that professionals grasp at a superior level is the principle of “enter late and exit early.”

Don’t waste time warming up the scene with greetings or small talk. Drop us right into the action; at the point of conflict, decision, or tension.

Sometimes it’s okay to slow the scene down and allow for a respite of action, but more often than not, you want the new scene to feel like a continuation of action from the previous. So once the beat of the scene has landed… cut!!! Move to the next moment.

This keeps your pacing sharp and your script professional. Watch your favorite movies and you’ll notice this. The vast majority of scenes shouldn’t have lead-ins or preambles that gradually bring us into the scene; instead, they should start as far into the action as possible without losing context.

If you don’t know where that is, here’s a little exercise to figure out where to enter the scene: read the scene and ask yourself after each line of action or dialogue, “can I cut this without compromising the objective of the scene?” If yes, then cut. I no, then don’t cut. Simple.

Of course, this presupposes you have a purpose or objective for the scene, and if you don’t, then I suggest you keep writing and don’t worry about this concept quite yet. Your priority should be getting in the reps.

But one more thing (I wasn’t gonna let you go without possibly the most important of the AI screenwriting hacks) you can use your Rewrite tool for this as well. Paste in the following instructions and see if it works for you:
“Rewrite this scene according to the “enter late, exit early” principle of screenwriting. Begin the scene as late as possible while still preserving its essential purpose and narrative clarity. End the scene at its peak moment or point of tension—cutting out any unnecessary resolution—but not so early that it undermines the scene’s objective.”

Process these instructions and see if it gets the job done!

So here are three powerful screenplay polishing techniques you can use with Scriptmatix Story Engine’s AI screenwriting tools:
• Replace and sharpen dialogue lines using the Wizard.
• Refine your style with the Rewrite tool.
• And control pacing by entering late and exiting early with the Rewrite tool

Use these consistently, and your draft will feel cleaner, sharper, and  more professional… even if you’re not.
