Screenplay development often determines whether a promising idea becomes a compelling film or stalls before the first draft. The Concept Development Lab was created to help serious screenwriters and filmmakers test their ideas, identify weak points, and build a stronger foundation before committing months to writing pages.
This season, the Scriptmatix team selected “Black Site A” by Mark Rochon as the Grand Prize winner of the Concept Development Lab.
To protect the project and its future development, the details of the concept will remain confidential.
We look forward to working directly with Mark to explore the premise, strengthen the characters, sharpen the narrative direction, and develop the concept toward its strongest possible execution.

Working With Real Producers Before Writing the Screenplay
Professional screenplay development is rarely a solitary process.
Ideas change inside screenplay development meetings. Characters become clearer through questions. Story problems emerge before they appear on the page. A producer may identify the version of the concept that offers the strongest emotional, creative, or commercial path forward.
The Concept Development Lab introduces emerging creators to that process.
Instead of receiving only a score or placement, selected writers enter a live screenplay development conversation. They can explain their intentions, respond to questions, explore alternatives, and see how an experienced producer evaluates the foundation of a potential film or television project.
This experience is especially valuable for writers who want to understand how concepts are discussed before they reach the marketplace.
What Selected Writers Receive
Writers chosen for the Concept Development Lab receive:
- A live 60-minute concept development session
- Professional guidance on premise, character, and execution
- One month of complimentary access to the Scriptmatix Writer Plan
- A recorded copy of the development session for continued refinement
The recording allows each writer to revisit the discussion while developing the concept, building the plot, creating an outline, or preparing to write the screenplay.
Selection is limited, and not every submitted concept is chosen for screenplay development.
Supporting Screenwriters From Concept to Marketplace
Scriptmatix carries a proven, hard-earned track record of empowering ambitious screenwriters and independent filmmakers to break through traditional industry barriers, actively guiding them toward high-stakes development deals, hands-on production opportunities, competitive literary representation, coveted staff writing positions, and direct room meetings with major entertainment decision-makers.
Writers supported through Scriptmatix programs have connected with companies including Netflix, Apple, Warner Bros., Sony, and other studios, production companies, and industry decision-makers.
The Concept Development Lab carries that exact commitment forward, acting as a dedicated space built specifically for emerging creators who are ready to push past the uncertainty of the blank page. After all, a brilliant premise never needs to arrive fully formed or neatly packaged on day one. It only needs to possess enough raw narrative friction and underlying potential to ignite that crucial next conversation and drive your project forward.
