Every storyteller’s creative journey begins with a single defining spark. For Vienna Skinnell, that moment arrived inside the very first film class offered at her high school. Blending a lifelong passion for visual art with narrative writing, she found the one medium that brought her imagination into focus. Today, that early discovery has carried her across the country to NYU for Film and TV Production and earned her win at the Scriptmatix Student Filmmaker Spotlight, marking the next exciting chapter in her creative journey.
For Skinnell, telling stories is far more than a craft, it is an absolute necessity. She views movies as both an escape and a distinct reality of their own, capable of making anything possible and creating meaningful change in the world. When working through tough patches, she avoids rigid, clock-punching routines, choosing instead to trust the natural momentum of her creative journey. By writing in sudden bursts of intense passion, she ensures that every script is fueled by genuine excitement and emotional truth.
That artistic sensibility is reflected in the influences that guide her work. Skinnell draws deep inspiration from the boundary-shattering cinema of David Lynch, as well as the sharp, wonderfully eccentric writing of filmmaker Eva Victor. When she isn’t in the classroom or drafting scenes, she loves exploring different coffee spots across New York to find the perfect writing environment.
That dedication is already translating into industry recognition. Her short film Killer Love earned official selections at both the Mill Valley Film Festival and the Newport Beach Film Festival. Her script Delicate not only captured top spotlight honors but also advanced as a semi-finalist in the Page Turner Awards. Pushing her creative journey into full-length narrative storytelling, Skinnell is preparing to distribute her debut feature film, The Social Distance, this winter through her independent company, Farley Bear Films.
Skinnell’s ultimate milestone goes far beyond personal achievements. Her overarching goal is to see women filmmakers achieve the exact household recognition and industry respect historically reserved for visionary directors like Christopher Nolan and Martin Scorsese.
